Certification Information
ALL Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicators are required to accumulate credit hours if recertifying by training.
In Kansas there are two ways to receive training for renewal certification: 1) study a manual and pass an examination and 2) attend approved "training courses," approved by the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture, for required recertification credit hour (CEU) accumulation. All applicators must now accumulate the necessary credit hours required for the appropriate category/subcategory you are certified in. If you have not accumulated the required number of credit hours (1 core hour and either 3, 5 or 7 pest management hours) and paid the certification fee ($50 per category certified in) to KDA by the expiration of your current certification, you must re-exam to obtain certification.
This website describes approved "training courses" for PARTIAL RECERTIFICATION RENEWAL. NOTE: Category 5 is NOT being offered in 2008, it will next be available in 2009. Due to the nature of this extension training program to date, it is impossible to fit all required pest management hours into a 2-day training sessions for all categories/subcategories. If you cannot complete all credit hours required for 2008 certification expiration, we recommend you take the exam. Afterward, begin accumulating credit hours for your 2009 through 2011 recertification expirations.
NOTE: Non-certified employees and others are welcome to attend for the value of the training and must pay the necessary program fees. BUT you must realize that certified applicators will be given priority if meeting room capacities are exceeded.
Please check your records (pocket card and/or certificate) to make sure of the expiration date. If your card expires December 31, 2008 and you have a record of attending a K-State sponsored renewal "training course" during 2006 or later, you may already have met PARTIAL or all renewal requirements. If your card expires beyond 2008, you may plan to attend now to begin accumulating credit hours. If your card was newly issued in 2007 or 2008, you may plan to attend this "training course" for credit hours or begin accumulating the appropriate credit hours elsewhere. NOTE: Renewal training meetings in some categories are also available from sessions sponsored by local county extension offices, various trade associations, or industry groups. Scheduling for these training opportunities is available from the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Pesticide Program. (You CANNOT add categories/subcategories without being examined.) See http://www.ksda.gov/includes/document_center/pesticides_fertilizer/Certification/RecertTraining.pdf for a current scheduled listing of approved programs in the "Commercial Pesticide Applicator Recertification Programs."
The alternative renewal certification method for all categories and subcategories is to obtain the appropriate manuals and take the examination. If all continuing credit hour requirements are not met, all exams must be retaken (general plus categories/subcategories). Manuals and examinations are available year around and, in most cases, the examinations are offered locally by the Kansas Department of Agriculture. See your local County Extension Office for the Kansas Department of Agriculture examination schedule and information on ordering commercial applicator manuals.
Program Mechanics
All attendees whose certification expires in 2008 must already have or attend the core hour, plus category/subcategory sessions to fulfill their pest management credit hour requirements.
Categories/subcategories have been grouped to accommodate, as well as possible, closely related categories/subcategories by topics presented. Applicators must attend the session that covers their specific categories/subcategories.
In some cases, it will be necessary to attend the category/subcategory training on one day and the Core Hour on another day. The Core Hour must only be attended once per three-year certification period. You may NOT attend the same session at two locations to accumulate all necessary pest management hours this year.
Some applicators are certified in many categories/subcategories, which may result in conflicts because of the concurrent group training sessions. In such cases, it may be possible for the applicator to attend the needed category/subcategories at an alternate location. A skeleton program is available to aid in selecting training locations.
Category 10 applicators must attend the Core Hour and the category/subcategory sessions that apply to the applicator's research and/or demonstration. There is no specific category 10 training.
For all applicator recertification renewals, please refer to the lists below for the number of credit hours to be accumulated by your category/subcategory to complete certification requirements.
Each applicator must retain receipt of attendance at recertification programs offering credit hours as proof of credit hours accumulated. A certificate will be stamped upon completion of each break-out session and Core Hour as "proof" of certification meeting attendance.
