Interdisciplinary Social Science

Overview

This degree completion program is designed for students who have completed the equivalent of the first two years of college. Social science is a branch of learning that examines society's institutions—their structures, theoretical foundations, evaluation, and interrelation—and how they affect and are affected by human behavior.

Course of Study

The Interdisciplinary Social Science degree from Kansas State University is a general social science degree. Students are required to take 36 credit hours with at least 3 credits being completed in each of four social science disciplines. Social science disciplines include: anthropology, economics, geography, history, mass communications, political science, psychology, sociology and women's studies. At least nine credit hours must be completed in one social science discipline, including one course at the 500 level or higher. At least 15 credit hours must be completed in social science disciplines at the 500 level or higher. Students must complete at least one course in social science research methods or data and analysis (statistics).

Students must take at least one Western Heritage course, the purpose of which is to ensure some interpretive or expressive competence regarding the institutions, traditions, and values that have shaped Western civilization.

Also required is an International Studies Overlay course, which is devoted to economic, political, and social relations; interactions between or among different countries; or contemporary features or historical traditions of non-Western cultures.

University General Education Requirements for Transfer Students

Students pursuing a bachelor's degree who transfer to K-State after the summer of 1997 with at least 45 credit hours accepted in transfer will be required to complete a minimum of 6 credit hours of K-State upper division (300 level or above) general education hours outside the major department. Degree Requirements

A total of 124 semester hours of credit is required for graduation. A minimum of 30 K-State semester hours is required and 20 of the last 30 hours must be taken from K-State. The minimum grade-point average required for graduation is 2.0, in addition to having a minimum 2.0 GPA within the major. Students entering K-State Fall 2003 or later must complete 45 credit hours at the 300 level or above.

Social Science Themes

All social science majors must submit a theme proposal (area of concentration) for approval. The theme proposal is due six weeks after the official curriculum guide evaluation is received from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Application Requirements

Students seeking a bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Social Sciences must have already earned a minimum of 60 semester credit hours with a 2.0 overall minimum GPA. The application fee is $60.
